Photodynamic therapy for skin damage in Grovedale, Geelong and Colac

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a non-invasive light treatment used to treat various skin conditions, including skin cancer, sun damage, acne, and rosacea. This highly effective therapy offers minimal side effects and downtime, making it a preferred option for patients looking for non-surgical treatment.

What conditions does photodynamic therapy treat?

PDT is a versatile treatment used for:

  • Superficial basal cell carcinoma (BCC)
  • Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) in situ (Bowen’s disease)
  • Actinic keratoses (AK) – Precancerous skin lesions
  • Actinic cheilitis – Precancerous changes in the lower lip
  • Sun-damaged skin – For rejuvenation and repair
  • Acne & rosacea – Reduces inflammation and improves skin clarity

How does photodynamic therapy work?

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) works by targeting damaged and cancerous skin cells while preserving healthy tissue. The treatment begins with the application of a photosensitising cream (ALA) to the affected area. This cream makes the abnormal cells more sensitive to light.

Once applied, the area is covered and left to incubate for a specified period. This allows the cream to penetrate and be absorbed by the damaged cells.

After the incubation period, the skin is exposed to an LED light source, which activates the drug. This reaction effectively destroys the targeted cells while leaving the surrounding healthy skin unharmed.

This targeted approach ensures effective treatment with minimal harm to normal skin tissue, making PDT a safe and non-invasive alternative to surgery.

What happens after PDT treatment?

Following PDT, it is essential to avoid direct sunlight and bright indoor lighting for at least 48 hours, as the treated skin will be highly sensitive to light.

During the recovery period, patients may experience some temporary side effects, including:

  • Redness, peeling, and flaking – Typically lasts 3–6 days
  • Itchiness, swelling, and tenderness – Usually subsides within 7–10 days
  • A tight feeling in the skin as healing progresses

To assist with recovery, you will receive a PDT aftercare guide with detailed instructions on how to care for your skin post-treatment.
